Meet Doctor Ridwan Mia – One of Sandton’s top Plastic Surgeons

Doctor Ridwan Mia is one of the leading Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons in Sandton, Johannesburg. A member of the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of South Africa, he currently runs private practices at the Netcare Sunninghill Hospital, the Sandton Mediclinic, and the Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg.

Dr Mia regularly gives lectures and talks to corporate, social, and career guidance groups. He provides vital guidance to schools and universities, which focuses on life experience, social cohesion, motivation, and health issues. He is also a brand ambassador of Project Distinction, a project that was created to give hope and offer incentives to children from underprivileged schools in an effort to encourage them to achieve better academic results.

Training and Academic History

Matriculating from the Marist Brothers’ Sacred Heart College, Dr Mia went on to study medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, and graduated as a doctor in 1999, specialising in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He also holds a fellowship with the college of plastic surgeons of South Africa. He has won numerous awards for his research and work in the medical industry, including:

  • Winner of the best research paper at the Congress of Plastic Surgeons for his research on collagen and wound healing.
  • Prize winner at the Burt Myburg Surgical Research Forum at the University of the Witwatersrand.
  • Awarded the National Order of the Baobab in April 2013 by the President of South Africa, after he made world headlines for a ground-breaking procedure done on a 3-year-old girl. During the procedure the young girl’s skin was cloned to cover her extensive burn wounds.

Office Manager: Leverne King

Leverne is an internationally qualified Beauty Professional with 11 years of experience in the Beauty Industry. She is fully certified with the City and Guilds and over the course of her career has taken a keen interest in the Health Care industry, specifically when it comes to client services. Her extensive knowledge and experience in dealing with clients allows her to manage the well-being of patients with a natural influence. Leverne works efficiently in a managerial role and is able to competently guide and mentor, with high levels of client satisfaction.

Leverne is the Practice Manager for Dr. Mia’s Surgery and is responsible for the front of house and day-to-day running of the clinic. Her professional approach to client management is evident in her handling of appointments and all general queries concerning medical procedures and treatments. Leverne plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the practice runs smoothly, that patient experience is pleasant while simultaneously overseeing the safety of all patients. Leverne also acts as PA to Dr Mia, managing his personal schedule.

Nurse: Nurse Caroline

Completing her BCur Nursing degree in 2009 from the University of Johannesburg, Sister Caroline Rex went on to completed her Community Service at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery ward.

With an intense love and passion for healing, Caroline went on to work for Smith & Nephew Advanced Wound Management, where she was able to put her skills and knowledge into practice, using their Wound Care product range. While at Smith and Nephew she focused her expertise on the Negative Pressure Wound Treatment System.

In May 2012 Caroline moved into private practice running a wound care clinic in the Johannesburg region, treating both hospitalised and home based patients at a cost effective rate.
