Meet Doctor Ridwan Mia

One of Sandton’s top plastic surgeons

Doctor Ridwan Mia is one of the leading Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons in Sandton, Johannesburg. A member of the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of South Africa, he currently runs private practices at the Netcare Sunninghill Hospital and Sandton Mediclinic.

Dr Mia regularly gives lectures and talks to corporate, social, and career guidance groups. He provides vital guidance to schools and universities, which focuses on life experience, social cohesion, motivation, and health issues. He is also a brand ambassador of Project Distinction, a project that was created to give hope and offer incentives to children from underprivileged schools in an effort to encourage them to achieve better academic results.

Training & Academic History

Matriculating from the Marist Brothers’ Sacred Heart College, Dr Mia went on to study medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, and graduated as a doctor in 1999, specialising in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He also holds a fellowship with the college of plastic surgeons of South Africa. He has won numerous awards for his research and work in the medical industry, including:


  • Winner of the best research paper at the Congress of Plastic Surgeons for his research on collagen and wound healing
  • Prize winner at the Burt Myburg Surgical Research Forum at the University of the Witwatersrand.
  • Awarded the National Order of the Baobab in April 2013 by the President of South Africa, after he made world headlines for a ground-breaking procedure done on a 3-year-old girl. During the procedure the young girl’s skin was cloned to cover her extensive burn wounds.
